2nd Street Jazz Bar + Grill #3
December 18, 2011, 2nd Street Jazz Bar + Grill, Los Angeles: KWE, with The Real Jane, Juke Joint Dogs, and Motion Factory.
Ya Ya, the Lee Dorsey twist dance hit, opened up this vigorous package of KWE tunes for a happy holiday bash. Gift Of The Sun burned the first layer of paper off the futurist wrappings, while Optimist's Parking Lot took us on fanciful moon rocking flights, only to return to earth with a pimped-up version of My Alien that included an interpolation of the Dream Syndicate's Sure Thing. O-Yeah!
Set: Ya Ya- Gift Of The Sun- Life Is A Mountain- Future Makes- Optimist's Parking Lot- Yes We Are The Futurists- Outer Space- My Alien.

September 26, 2009: KWE@ The Old Towne Pub, Pasadena, CA. The two opening bands don't show up.Scrape truck in narrow brick alley way. The barflies don't turn around when the KWE rocks it. Beer spills on the guitar amp. But Supersonic was sublime.

Black Watch Pub
August 8, 2009: KWE @ Black Watch Pub, Upland CA, with Falcon Eddy and One F. An excellent and speeding gig in a busy bar located in a sleepy strip-mall in the Inland Empire. Upon starting I asked the crowd if they wanted me to go easy or hard... "go hard" they said. Well I cleared the tables ahead of me in a matter of minutes. Closed the raucous set with a metal powered take on Adam & the Ants' "Physical."
Set list: La La La - Back To The Pyramids - Hate The Sun - Oh, Silly Girl - Equal to Equal - Job's Tears - Dirty Light - That Wicked Sublime - Pyramids Waiting - Physical (You're So)
Old Towne Pub #1
June 22, 2009 @ The Old Towne Pub, Pasadena, CA, with M31, Falcon Eddy, and Unfinished Robot. A late night gig sandwiched between two days of jury duty. Sound In Space Festival
February 20, 2009: KWE @ Sea & Space, Highland Park Los Angeles. One Man Band Night of the month long Sound In Space Festival curated by Aaron Drake and Clay Chapin. Set: Dirty Light - KWExotic - That Wicked Sublime - Back To The Pyramids - Dust Dudes - Communications
Marc Horowitz's Talk Show
February 2, 2009: KWE performs for www.talkshow247.com, a month long live stream conceptual video collage project by artist Marc Horowitz in Los Angeles. It felt great to play only new material. Mr. T's Arlo balanced the sound quite well. John Rosewall (formerly of Trotsky Icepick) remarked that "it was my pleasure to experience the Experience. A wild card evening of video, art performances, and music performances by Anna Oxygen, Skip Arnold, Douglas Lee, Ed Gomez and others curated by Matt Wardell in this vast art space. Suzy's
December 14, 2007: KWE @ Suzy's Hermosa Beach, opening for Landfill, Big Mess, and Mike Watt & the Missingmen. Joe Baiza of Saccharine Trust joined me for the ride down to see the show. Strobe lights, X-mas lights, smoke machine, and a rowdy audience lent plenty of ambience to this South Bay "rock of ages" KWE show.
Set: Alarm Tint Stereo- War- Lost Angeles-Superman- That Wicked Sublime-Job's Tears- Hate The Sun-Mailbox Baseball
Mr. T's Bowl #1
October 26, 2007: KWE @ Mr. T's Bowl, Highland Park, Los Angeles. Opening for The Multiple Now Syndrome, The Lofty Canaanites (with Jack Brewer & Joe Baiza of Saccharine Trust), and The Shards. A veil of dark gauze hung from the ceiling, surrounding my entire kit. Faster crash cymbals, Parkwood Hybrid guitar, harmonicas, new noisemakers, new 8" tom on drum upon a new riser graced the kit. The dense new rocker Everyone Likes The Lights tested out well that evening (though it didn't emerge on the next album Back To The Pyramids). Today Is Victory and Rainbow Highway (Boogie) were rare live performances of multi-tracked tunes from, respectively, Strictly Panasonic and the You're In My Heaven albums. Supersonic was at that time almost a Metal tune. It featured the old Takamine acoustic-electric set for sharp feedback, accompanied by a noisemaker at its chaotic, dervishing finale. This was a super fueled set complemented by a progression of broken strings that bred dissonant guitar improvisations and drum solos during moments of re-tuning. The encore was a raw Ska-like version of That Wicked Sublime.
Set: Today Is Victory- Everyone Likes The Lights- Rainbow Highway (Boogie)- Hate The Sun- Lost Angeles- Job's Tears- Supersonic- That Wicked Sublime.
A Friendly Place
March 23, 2007: KWE @ A Friendly Place (Martin Durazo’s Studio), Los Angeles. Followed by Raugust (members of Indian Jewelry). The KWE returns a la carte on this cold March night bouncing a wave of distortion, Joy Division and Jesus and Mary Chain tunes, and originals off the bricks, bodies, and barbed wire of this giant downtown art party. One power cord and one light in complete darkness for a one hour electric set. This is the last KWE set where the Takamine acoustic-electric was used exclusively. Vocals were set on rockabilly reverb. A snappy 10” Piccolo snare on modified kit riser now replaced the last in what was a long history of steel mailboxes.
Set: Other Worlds- Oh Silly Girl- All Without- Happy Place- War- Today Is Victory- Tape Me- Hate The Sun- Dead Souls- Get Back To The Flat (Tribal version)- I Went Down With The Broken Pieces

Topper's Tavern #3
January 18, 2003: KWE @ Topper's Tavern, Eagle Rock, CA, with Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti and Saticoy. A very unhinged performance. Cosmic projections by Phil Franklin. Set list: Tonight- Political Noise Theme- Lost Angeles- Hate The Sun- Superman- It's A Sign- The Evil Empire- I Went down with The Broken Pieces.
Angeles Bohemios Cafe
January 12, 2003: A rare "folk" acoustic KWE gig @ Angeles Bohemios Cafe in Silverlake, CA. A surreal cold Sunday evening along with Sexy Ukeleli, Pinky Jones, Hannah & Elana, Cecil Seaskull. One friend of the KWE remarked that "several of my limbs were catatonic!" Meanwhile, my voice had its elastic character phase shifting quality, which I felt was too powerful for the place. Several tunes from KWE II-V were performed, with a special appearance of the ancient spaghetti-lid tapper. Set: The Evil Empire- The Invisible Brigade- Here She Comes- Hate The Sun- I Went Down With The Broken Pieces.
Westwood Star Charter School
November 19, 2002: KWE @ Westwood Star Charter School, Los Angeles, a performance curated by artist-teacher Chris Cichocki. Start gig with jumping jacks while kids chant "KWE...KWE...KWE..." My words and music are bombs ready to explode in the minds of young people. Will the provocative lyrics of "War" or "Hate The Sun" breed new chaos? Will the Dionysian power of rhythm rule the day? Thirty minutes into the set I am puppeteer at the epicenter of the emerging dancing activity. The kiddies start rocking out big time... and then...!
Set: La La La- Hate The Sun- War- All Of You- Smile- Oh Silly Girl- Lost Angeles- 4 a.m. I Am. (see video in Blog Section).

Anastasia's Asylum
August 8, 2002: Anastasia's Asylum, Santa Monica, CA., with Saticoy. An experiment in fewer decibels than usual in this coffeehouse environment. Secret is to start quietly and then get louder. KWE hoisting drums over patron's heads, to perform from the cozy balcony. Set: Quiet improv morphing into 4 a.m. I Am- Three Words- All Of You- Hate The Sun- Tracing sunshine- Job's Tears- Smile With You.

DEMOLISTEN KXLU RADIO
March 29, 2002: KXLU Radio, Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles. "I am my own union--I am an anarchist." Up four flights of stairs to the radio studio. Crazy "dark" show, filling up aural space. Went into rant about an airwaves interfering Christian station. Demolisten's DJ Fred is amused. Artist Scott Davis videotapes the event. Featuring songs from Modal Universe and upcoming Lost Angeles albums.
Set: Come On- Dervish- Hate The Sun- Superman- War- Oh Silly Girl- 99 Cent Culture- I Went Down with The Broken Pieces.
Westwood Brewery
March 20, 2002: KWE @ Westwood Brewery. Upstairs at this west side LA watering hole, appearing with Saticoy. A warm, psychedelic, and flowing evening testing out a couple new tunes (Superman made the final cut on the upcoming Lost Angeles album), and a dreamy, long technicolor solo to the closing motorik instrumental tune Almost New Again.
Set: Dervish- Hole- Superman- Friendly Creature Eye- Alarm Tint Stereo- Hate The Sun- Almost New Again.
The Dragonfly
March 12, 2002: KWE @ The Dragonfly, Los Angeles, appearing with Shoddy and Telegenic. The KWE kit was growing in size and complexity: chimes and a new aluminum speed-rail percussion rack. Disco ball overhead spinning 'round. The sound-guy is not sure how to mic the mailbox snare drum. Several tunes performed from upcoming Los Angeles album. LA Woman was a raw rocker.
Set: War- LA Woman- Tonight- Superman- All Of You- Hate The Sun.
Lush
February 28, 2002: KWE @ Lush, Santa Monica, CA. Completely wrong setting for the KWE. Wore power-tie for "80s Night"--the bookies got their signals crossed and I slipped into the mix. Ha! Small audience. Set cut short by confused and annoyed sound guy. Artist Chris Tallon comes with nice handmade KWE sharpie-marker T shirts.
Set: Alarm Tint Stereo- Tonight- The Brightest Night- War.
Zen Sushi #2
February 13, 2002: KWE@ Zen Sushi, Silverlake. CA, with
Very Be Careful, RFA, and Delucca. Warm saki and Kirin chasers on a red stage draped with lots of fast-moving love all around. For some reason chose yellow for flyer instead. Must've been the yellowtail on little plates.
Set: Alarm Tint Stereo- Tonight- War- The Brightest Night- Hate The Sun- 99 Cent Culture.
Blue Saloon #2
January 31, 2002: KWE@ The Blue Saloon, North Hollywood, CA. Most songs from the Modal Universe album. An acoustic rendition of The Doors' Indian Summer--with the ghost of Jim Morrison on hand--was the lull in the storm at this packed Valley gig. To the audience's delight I finished the set by throwing myself into the kit.
Set: War- Hate The Sun- Indian Summer- Modal Universe- 99 Cent Culture- Job's Tears- Very Vague- the Brightest Night- I Went Down With The Broken Pieces.
Echo Park Art Party
January 15, 2002: KWE@ Echo Park, CA party. A frosty but beautiful starlit evening with large art audience. Outdoor-garage performance with live video feed of drum action from behind the kit going to multiple TV monitors. Many of the songs were performed in a more ambient manner with lots of feedback and delay. Later on I improvised to the actions of the stilt-walking woman!
Set: All Of You- Personal- The Brightest Night- Hate The Sun-
I Went Down With The Broken Pieces- Mohave Window- Job's Tears- War- 99 Cent culture- Oh, Silly Girl- Almost New Again.
Zen Sushi
December 30, 2001: KWE@ Zen Sushi, Silverlake, CA. Sushi downstairs and rock 'n' roll upstairs, with Pleasant the Meaner and Black Angel. Audience sucked into trance by the acoustic guitar instrumental drones of All Of You and Almost New Again, and then catapulted with the pedal-to-the-metal of Job's Tears, et. al. A great night!
Set: All Of You- Almost New Again- Come On- Job's Tears- 99 Cent Culture- War- Hate The Sun.
The Blue Saloon
December 19, 2001: KWE@ The Blue Saloon, North Hollywood, CA. A cold scintillating night with my stuff on the curb for a while until ready to fill the stage. Christmas lights adorn the kit drums. LA friends show up; some are taken aback by the KWE hack job of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. Most of the songs were from the Modal Universe album. Almost New Again was a new wistful yet motorik instrumental. Come On (..."she's the little girl with the red dress on...") was a new tune, somewhat less baroque than the eventual album version, which fed into rap about Jim Morrison in Paris. Can't recall who else was on the bill.
Set: Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas- War- Big Black Hole- Almost New Again- Hate The Sun- Job's Tears- A Schedule Is As Close As Some People Get To A Life- Come On- 99 Cent Culture- I Went Down with The Broken Pieces.
The CIA #2
October 26, 2001: KWE @ The California Institute for Abnormal Arts, North Hollywood, CA., with Betty Dylan and Saticoy. A funny revved up show with witches hat and unusually interactive crowd. Started set gently with Campfire Girl. The Brightest Night was new chugging instrumental (that appeared on the Lost Angeles album) that was redlined with acoustic guitar feedback and metallic reverb. I felt truly transported for a few minutes.
Set: Campfire Girl- Lemon-Crusted Fathom- The Brightest Night- Job's Tears- War- One-Man-Band Rap- Hate The Sun- Eight Days A Week- Real R 'n' R Rap.
The CIA
June 29, 2001: KWE @ The California Institute for Abnormal Arts, North Hollywood, CA. A very strange carnivalesque environment with carved wood figurines, elaborate stage, mirror ball, and continuous "outer limits" background soundtrack coming from another room. That performance was the testing ground for the Modal Universe album that was recorded a few days later by Dave Greenberg at Boomtown. The view at left is from the drumming and feedback conclusion of the song Modal Universe.
Set: War- Big Black Hole- Memory Takes- Enough- Hate The Sun-
A Schedule Is As Close As...- Job's Tears- 99 Cent Culture- Modal Universe- I Went Down With The Broken Pieces.
Canter's Kibitz Room #2
May 14, 2001: KWE @ Canter's Kibitz Room, Los Angeles. A raucous evening performance that seemed to channel Pussy Galore, with a big set of tunes that would emerge on the Modal Universe album. I lo-fi audio taped the show; I Went Down With The Broken sounded best, most focused and manic. I threw myself forward into my kit at the end of this song, pushing the three club microphones into wild feedback. While the crowd loved it, Francine the booking lady flipped out and banned me from the club. Well, the only thing really I'll miss is the post-show pastrami sandwich.
Set: Alarm Tint Stereo- War- Big Black Hole- Oh, Silly Girl-
A Schedule Is As Close As...- Bubble Thing- Hate The Sun-
99 Cent Culture- The Brown Paper Bag- La La La-
I Went Down With The Broken Pieces.
